Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid Cancer

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in the midline (front side of the neck). Usual symptoms are lump in the neck which progressively increases in size. When the disease advances, extra thyroidal spread can occur which can lead to breathing problems (airway obstruction), difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia) and hoarseness of voice due to involvement of recurrent laryngeal nerve.

Common types of thyroid cancer
1) Differentiated thyroid cancer (Papillary, Follicular)- Most common
2) Medullary thyroid cancer
3) Anaplastic thyroid cancer
4) Rare- lymphoma, poorly differentiated

Surgery

Thyroidectomy with or without selective neck dissection. Post- operative radioactive iodine ablation may be needed in differentiated thyroid cancers.

Prognosis

Well differentiated thyroid cancers have a very good survival
